At West Midlands Police, Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.

As an apprentice you’ll:

  • work alongside experienced staff
  • gain job-specific skills
  • earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • get time for study related to your role (usually one day a week)

Apprenticeships typically take 1 to 3 years but some can take up to 5 years to complete depending on their level and the job role.

Examples of apprenticeship opportunities with West Midlands Police include:

  • Admin Assistant
  • Laboratory Technician
  • Police Community Support Officer
  • IT Support Officer
  • Vehicle Technician

Who can apply for a West Midlands Police Apprenticeship?

You can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school, already at college or even if you are in a job role. To start one, you’ll need to be:

  • 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays
  • Living in England
  • Not in full-time education
  • Applicants will be required to complete pre- employment vetting checks

Pay and conditions

You’ll be paid during your apprenticeship. At West Midlands Police our Apprentices are currently paid at around £8 per hour averaging a £16,000 per year salary. This compares well to the current minimum wage rate for an apprentice which is £3.50 per hour averaging a £6,600 annual salary.

Hours of work and training

At West Midlands Police you will be paid for:

  • your normal working hours-usually 36.5 hours per week
  • training that’s part of your apprenticeship- usually one day per week

Holidays

You’ll get at least 20 days paid holiday per year, plus bank holidays.

Levels of apprenticeship

There are a wide range of levels for apprenticeship programmes which relate to the job role, the knowledge, responsibilities and experience required to work in that role. The apprenticeship levels can be compared to existing qualifications to give a guide to the value of each level:

Name                                Level                      Equivalent educational level

Intermediate                  2                                 GCSE

Advanced                        3                                 A level

Higher                        4,5,6 & 7       HNC, HND, Foundation degree & above

Degree                         6 & 7                 Bachelor’s or master’s degree

At West Midlands Police we are expanding the levels of apprenticeships that we offer. Currently we offer apprenticeships at levels 2 & 3, but will be offering higher level apprenticeships from 2018/19.
