Grade: 7

About the role:

Software Developer, focussing on C# Intranet Web Development

Are you an experienced C# intranet web developer?

Are you ready to make a real difference to people in the West Midlands?

Join our team and be at the heart of UK Policing’s most ambitious ongoing technology transformation.  Use your technical skills in intranet development to prevent crime, protect the public, and help those in need.

West Midlands Police has over the last few years undergone a period of unparalleled change and innovation; our technology is pivotal to both maintaining operational capabilities and building future success as we develop our solutions even further.  Integration of our new systems will enable us to maximise benefit to our organisation and our users.

You will be working within the Development team in our Delivery Management function alongside a committed and enthusiastic team of other developers.  You’ll receive support from other Software Developers, Senior Software Developers and managers across the Delivery function.

You will be responsible for the development of highly functional web solutions, used by our front-line officers, specialist support staff and corporate users.  There will be an expectation for you to have a broad range of knowledge both in terms of existing technologies already in use as well as alternative methods which could bring about service improvement.Working within the IT & Digital Team is rewarding; we offer the opportunity to work in a large organisation where people can develop their skills, knowledge and careers in an encouraging and flexible environment.  Our benefits include:

  • 28 days holiday (plus bank holidays) rising to 33 days after five years’ service
  • Access to a Corporate Health Cash Plan and wellbeing support services
  • Modern working environment in central Birmingham with established agile working practices using industry-leading remote working technology
  • Opportunity to save on travel costs through a Corporate Travel Scheme

“Improvement through innovation” is a core component of West Midlands Police’s This Work Matters strategy and you will play an important part of delivery on this promise.  Being a strong performer is part of our underpinning Values.

The application process involves a practical challenge so you have opportunity to showcase, rather than just telling us, what you can do!

We'd really welcome your application if:

  • You have the ability to develop software both independently and as part of a team of developers
  • You have the ability to develop a solution against a set of prescribed requirements
  • You are able to debug existing applications and implement fixes in order to deliver an improved solution and service
  • You have knowledge and experience of C# web solution development, using .NET Core with MVC or Razor Pages, bootstrap, and React
  • You have knowledge and experience of creating REST APIs using C# .NET Core WebAPI and can help us deliver our mobile apps by creating supporting services

West Midlands Police is a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level an organisation can achieve under the scheme run by the Department of Work and Pensions.  As part of our commitment we operate a ‘Disability Confident Interview Scheme’ - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview.

It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.

"Diversity and Inclusion Vision:  Maximise the potential of people from all backgrounds through a culture of fairness and inclusion to deliver the best service for our communities"
