Public Protection Unit – West Midlands Police

The officers that join PPU will be on the frontline, supporting investigations into serious offences and safeguarding victims.


Working within the Public Protection Unit at West Midlands Police is a great opportunity to really make a difference to people’s lives.  We are recruiting into the department as the demand for our specialist skills continues to increase due to the changes in complexity and demand.

The majority of our opportunities are in Birmingham; a small number are available throughout the remainder of the region.  


General Application

Applications will be considered from re-joiners who left the service less than 5 years ago at the time of appointment. Public Protection Unit

About you

We are seeking experienced officers who are up for a challenge!


The ability to effectively plan, prioritise, manage risk and work with others are core requirements of this role. Applicants also need to have strong communication and interpersonal skills to be able to build relationships with victims, internal colleagues and external partners. Ensuring the welfare of victims and their families is paramount to this position. You will also demonstrate the values of West Midlands Police and be able to write accurate reports to a high standard.


Successful Applicants will be working between the hours of 8:00 & 23:00 hours 7 days per week in accordance with the departmental shift pattern.


The PPU is supportive of flexible working applications, however operational need, service delivery and managing demand is paramount and applicants must be able to work to meet that demand.


Due to the necessity to conduct visits to victims, engage with offenders and undertake enquiries and actions alone, this role may not be suitable for officers with restrictions around public contact and confrontational roles.

Experienced Police Constables

Enthusiastic police constables are invited to apply for an exciting opportunity to join the Public Protection Unit (PPU) initially working within the Domestic Abuse (DA) Investigation team. Within this team you will support DA investigations and the safeguarding of victims and members of the public.


Subject to performance, PCs aspiring to become detectives will be given the opportunity to apply to join our ‘Detective Academy’. Upon successfully completing an assessment process you will be supported to develop your skills, undertake the NIE exam and achieve ICIDP accreditation.


Experienced Detective Constables

Enthusiastic Detective Constables are invited to apply for an exciting opportunity to join the Public Protection Unit (PPU) working within the Domestic Abuse (DA), Child Abuse (CA) or Sexual Offence Teams (SOT) supporting complex investigations and the safeguarding of victims and members of the public.


We are seeking PIP 2 qualified detective constables who have experience of supporting complex investigations. It is preferred, but not essential, that you have experience within a Public Protection Unit and have completed the Specialist Child Abuse Investigation Development Programme (SCAIDP). If you join us and have not yet completed the SCAIDP training we will support you to achieve this where appropriate.
