About NABIS:
As the National Ballistics Intelligence Service we play a crucial part in UK policing working with the police forces of England, Wales, Scotland and PSNI as well as partner law enforcement agencies.
NABIS provides fast-time intelligence linked to the criminal use of firearms, linking firearms incidents across the UK to help develop a national understanding of the use, supply, importation and manufacture of illegal firearms.
About the Role:
As part of the NABIS Continuous Improvement Team the Information Assurance Officer provide support for the performance analysis and database function within NABIS by researching and analysing performance and organisational information available from the assessment of Force Performance Metrics & the NABIS Database.
The Information Assurance Officer ensures a high level of information assurance across the organisation by working across force systems and locations to identify areas of risk in relation to secure and appropriate information management processes, and advises on improvement activity as a result of their findings.
They provide data for statutory obligations including Freedom of Information requests.
In addition, they carry out dip samples / audits of Force systems, as required by legislation, and other national or local requirements in order to ensure appropriate use of systems and to identify any information management concerns.
They also support external training to forces and as such will be expected to have facilitation experience or be prepared to be trained to deliver courses on NABIS systems.
Key Responsbilities:
- The post holder will ensure a high level of information assurance across the organisation through the continuous improvement of information management practices.
- The post holder will work across systems and locations to identify areas of risk in relation to secure and appropriate information management processes and advise on improvement activity as a result of their findings.
- Provide data for statutory obligations including Freedom of Information requests.
- They will carry out dip samples / audit of NABIS systems and process as required by legislation and other national or local requirements in order to ensure appropriate use of systems and identify any information management concerns.
- Assisting NABIS to comply with the requirements of the Home Office in relation to Information Assurance such as Management of Police Information (MoPI) guidance, the Data Protection Act and Information Security controls.
- Support external training to ensure that forces maximise opportunities through correct use of the NABIS database May include such other duties that are commensurate with the grade and general nature of the post.
- Good planning and organisation skills.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external partners.
- An awareness of the importance of good information management practices
- Knowledge of MoPI, Data Protection Act 1998, Government Security Classification Scheme, Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and Freedom of Information Act 2000, Criminal Procedures and Investigation Act 1996.
- Microsoft Office Proficient, in particular MS Word, Excel & Power point.
Essential Skills:
- Process data quality work correcting information where possible.
- Correct Force records within systems in accordance with legal obligations and policy.
- Assure information within NABIS systems in relation to set standards and report back to forces or NABIS functions
- Liaise with business areas to identify training issues, recurring errors and ways to improve any poor information management practices identified.
- Seek and provide information as required for statutory obligations including Freedom of Information requests.
- Proactively identify improvements in current processes including automation of repeat requests and reports where possible.
- Conduct proactive audit / dip sample of NABIS systems, and process highlighting data quality, Information Management and Security concerns.
- Analyse a range of information noting patterns and trends. Present the results in an appropriate format.
- Ensure appropriate use of NABIS information assets (systems, buildings and equipment) and report any suspected misuse.
- Participate in meetings / user groups and represent the team where required.
- Provide guidance and advice on Information Management legislation and guidance such as MoPI and Government Security Classification Scheme.

Vetting
Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.
Medical
Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
