About the role:


West Midlands Police are a considerable way into an existing transformation programme – as such, technologies such as Cloud, Artificial Intelligence, Automation and Mobility are no longer visionary – they underpin policing today.  This role will lead on architecture and design around multiple technology areas to ensure that West Midlands Police remains at the forefront of adoption and use of technology – therefore allowing us to excel at our vision, to prevent crime, protect the public and help those in need.


The IT & Digital department is responsible for the force’s adoption and use of information and digital technology.  The department consists of three core functions as follows:-

  • Architecture Management (responsible for identifying and selecting the right technologies for the force)
  • Delivery Management (responsible for delivering and implementing the right technologies for the force)
  • Service Management (responsible for managing and maintaining all live, operational technology for the force)

The Lead Architect Team Manager is a role within the Architecture Management function within IT & Digital and is responsible for leading on the design and modelling of strategic and tactical architectures for delivery, development and support of projects.  Ensuring that policies, standards and guidelines are developed/maintained to ensure a consistent architecture across our technology estate.

 

The role will be responsible for the quality of designs created, that are submitted to technical governance boards for successful adoption.  You will have a big influence on technology choices, and its architecture – which underpins all areas of policing.


Leading a team of architects from different technology areas (Such as; infrastructure, applications, security and solutions) the role will manage the workload across the architecture team, ensuring technology solutions are designed against our end-state blueprints and requirements.


The role of architecture within IT & Digital has been adopted successfully over a four year period, including its processes, operation, governance and deliverables – this role will shape the next iteration of architecture within IT & Digital, as it expands to account for more areas of future roadmaps and capabilities.

  • Reporting to the Head of Architecture, the Lead Architect Team Manager in Architecture Management is responsible for the following key areas;
  • Lead the design and modelling of strategic and tactical architectures for delivery, development, and support of projects
  • Develop and maintain policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure that a consistent framework is applied across the organisation.
  • Ensuring that solutions adhere to all architectural, security and quality standards.
  • Lead a team to develop End to End Solution Designs to meet business objectives and great customer outcomes.
  • Build the long-term strategic roadmap for all IT systems architecture. Seamlessly integrate business and service strategy into architecture roadmap
  • Engagement with business stakeholders when ideas are conceived; and lead in shaping them into deliverable projects.






Must demonstrate proven experience and ability to:

  • Experience building architecture roadmaps
  • Ability to establish, implement, and enforce appropriate IT standards to meet business requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hardware, software, application, and systems engineering
  • Experience designing, integrating, and managing complex solutions
  • Ability to "think big" and challenge conventional wisdom regarding technology refresh and hype
  • Strong leadership and negotiation skills with business and technical groups
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus among many stakeholders
  • Direct line management experience across a range of disciplines and levels – including recruitment, development, appraisals, and objectives;
  • Demonstrable experience to lead and manage an architecture team with technically skilled individuals;
  • Demonstrable experience in reviewing and challenging technical designs and architecture.
  • Demonstrate technical experience and expertise in at least one of the domains of Infrastructure, Applications, Security and Solution architecture.
  • Demonstrable experience of directly communicating with senior managers from a professional perspective using written and oral methods;
  • Participate in, and chair, meetings;
  • Promote equality, diversity and Human Rights in working practices;
  • Maintain standards for security of information.
  • Experience of presenting designs and subsequent choices to a range of stakeholders.
  • An IT and/or management related qualification with a minimum requirement that it be Degree level, or demonstrable specialist skills in management;
