West Midlands Police are currently recruiting Detective Constable transferees to join our Force Priorities and Vulnerabilities Team which comprises a mixed economy of PPU and FCID staff. The department is based within central Birmingham.


A challenging but equally rewarding role; you will be expected to lead investigations into linked series offences, locate and arrest high risk offenders and manage complex criminal conspiracies. Utilising covert assets the team will also be supporting complex investigation teams, human trafficking and child sexual exploitation investigations.


Within the team you will be involved in protecting the vulnerable and those in need within our communities as well as supporting the force’s emerging threats and priorities in the West Midlands policing area, where the responsibility is varied and far-reaching.


The investigations can cross local, national and international borders and you must be willing to travel within and outside the West Midlands Police Force area. Driving positive outcomes for victims and witnesses through demanding criminal justice processes is a key aspect of the role. Experience of preparing a case according to CPIA and effectively engaging with CPS, appointed counsel and other partner agencies is therefore essential.


The work is flexible and dynamic and we expect the same from the candidate. Experience of working with covert assets is desirable but not essential.


The successful candidate will be subject to Management Vetting.


Flexibility with working hours is essential, however, we welcome applications from those with flexible working agreements in place and always endeavour to support a healthy work-life balance for staff.

Essential Requirements:


  • Be a substantive Detective Constable with any required work-based assessments complete and signed off
  • Transferring from a Home Office Force
  • Demonstrate sound investigative skills including a good knowledge of Criminal Law together with knowledge and understanding of crime investigation procedures and reporting requirements
  • Thorough working knowledge of PACE powers and Warrants and how to apply them
  • A thorough knowledge of all current legislation, policies and procedures relevant to the role
  • An understanding of Custody, criminal justice agencies and court procedures
  • Experience of utilising sensitive policing methods and investigations
  • Experience of planning and organising operations


Desirable Requirement:

  • Experience of investigating complex, cross-border criminality requiring advanced investigative techniques and use of a wide range of covert options.
