Detention/Escort Officer
Essential Criteria
- Be 18 years or over
- Hold a full driving licence
- Have a minimum of GCSE grade C or GCSE grade 5 (the new numeric grading) in English and maths or level 2 functional skills qualifications in English and maths or an equivalent level maths and English qualification
- As the role is extremely demanding, candidates will be required to successfully pass a fitness test (bleep test-four shuttles at level 5)
- Complete a medical examination by WMP Occupational Health
- Successfully pass Personal Safety Training
- Be able to write in a clear, concise and accurate manner
- Be helpful and compassionate
- Work within an environment which can at times be unpleasant and aggressive
- Be able to manage and prioritise your work whilst working under your own initiative and as part of a team
- Have the ability to remain calm and professional when faced with volatile situations
- Successfully deliver your role within a pressured environment
- Be a confident decision maker with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Conditions
There are DEO positions available at Perry Barr, Oldbury, Wolverhampton and Coventry with an intended start date of mid-2021.
DEOs are required to work weekends and bank holidays, where allowances are paid as appropriate.
If successful and offered a Detention Escort Officer Apprenticeship you will be required to attend an initial paid four week training course in Birmingham at the start of your employment (Mon – Fri 08:00 – 16:00). This course will incorporate aspects of legislation, policy, first aid, personal safety and ICT systems.
This will be followed by completion of the City and Guilds Level 3 in Customer Care which will be supported by a local college. Development days are provided by WMP and are built into your shift pattern in order to complete this mandatory qualification.
Due to the nature of the role, preferred candidates will be required to undertake both Recruitment Vetting (RV) and CTC (Counter Terrorism Check) Vetting which includes a medical examination.
Flexibility is required as you may be deployed to a custody suite within the West Midland Police force area at short notice.
