If so, we have an exciting opportunity to join us as Assistant Director of Forensic Services based in Ridgepoint House, Bromford Lane, Birmingham.


West Midlands Police are seeking an Assistant Director of Forensic Services that is ready to lead and manage the overall function of Forensic Services ensuring that it provides a first class service and immediate forensic response to police investigations across a multitude of forensic disciplines. Reporting to the Assistant Chief Constable (Crime) you will set the strategy for Forensic Services; aligning national forensic innovation and best practice to our organisational priorities.

About the role


As the Assistant Director of Forensic Services you will have the unique opportunity to oversee a large technical workforce in excess of 200 ranging from frontline FSI through to the emerging technical disciplines of Digital Forensics (e-Crime). You will hold ultimate responsibility for compliance to forensic science standards (including ISO 17025 & 17020) ensuring the delivery of specialist services within a quality focussed and accredited facility.  In addition, the Assistant Director will:

  • Lead a large complex technical specialist unit and its interdependencies including Firearms and LAB areas
  • Lead stakeholder relationships locally and nationally
  • Coordinate and task the Forensic Senior Leadership Team
  • Update, support and report into Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), and the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC)
  • Represent West Midlands Police nationally, at NPCC Forensic Portfolio Boards and expert networks
  • Oversee and run projects locally and nationally
  • Strategically influence and shape future services in partnership with the NPCC Transforming Forensics Programme 
  • Senior responsibility for compliance, validation and technical competence that falls under the scope of ISO 17020, 17025 and 9001 
  • Ownership and accountability for the Forensic Services budget
  • Set objectives and outline policies that contribute to improved efficiency and productivity of the function and Force   

About you


You will be an experienced senior leader who has successfully managed, motivated and led a large multidisciplinary workforce.  With an authentic presence and exceptional interpersonal skills, you’ll naturally inspire confidence and instil trust as visible leader.  Committed to achieving true change-led results, you’ll be comfortable negotiating with senior leaders. You will also:

  • Hold an accredited forensic qualification
  • Hold a recognised managerial qualification; or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience
  • Be able to demonstrate an in depth understanding of quality standards and audit management
  • Have extensive demonstrable experience in performance and budget management
  • Be able to demonstrate substantial knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, forensic strategy, policy and procedures
  • Have excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Be able to work under pressure and successfully deliver competing demands

Due to the nature of the role the post holder will be required to undertake an appropriately stringent vetting procedure and be cleared to Management level of vetting.


You may be a required to work outside of normal working hours on occasion, including Bank Holidays and weekends.
