The Person
You do not need to be a police officer to be an investigator but you do need to have experience of working in an investigative role. Full training will be given but any prior investigation skills would be an advantage. We are looking for people who are flexible, organised, self-motivated and most of all approachable. You will be required to offer support to victims of crime and be prepared to handle and diffuse situations of conflict. You will need a full driving licence, good I.T skills, be able to work on your own and also as part of a team. You should be prepared to travel to various locations across the West Midlands.
The post holder will be required to work a shift pattern covering 7 days a week to include evenings and weekends.
Essential Requirements:
- Ability to write clear, concise and accurate reports
- Experience of working in an environment dealing with the public
- Working knowledge of confidentiality and data protection issues
- Be willing to successfully undertake any training requirements in respect of the role, which will include:
- Personal Safety Training (conflict resolution level)
- West Midlands Police IT Systems training
- Investigation module
- Experience of working effectively in a team
Desirable Requirements:
- Investigation and evidence gathering experience
- Previous experience in criminal law and criminal justice system
- Working knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act
- Knowledge of police policy and procedures in relation to the role
- Experience of dealing with conflict
- Experience of working in a multi-agency environment, working with partner agencies

Q, Do I need any prior law enforcement or investigation experience?
A. No. Full training will be given but prior experience would be of benefit.

A. Roles are available at Initial Investigation (Lloyd House), Birmingham East (Stechford) and Sandwell (West Bromwich). Please specify which post you are applying for.
Q. Do I need to have a full driving licence?
A. Yes, you may be required to travel to a range of locations across the West Midlands
Q. Will undertaking this role help my application to be a police officer?
A. This role will provide a real insight into policing and the role of an investigator. You don’t have to be a police officer to investigate crime. We have investigators at all levels and we are developing a professional career pathway for non-police officer investigators.
Q. Do I have to wear a uniform?
A. No. We expect our investigators to wear smart business attire.
