About the role:


Regional Covert Investigations Unit 2 X Detective Constables

Expressions of interest are invited from substantive constables within the region in respect of vacancies on the Regional Covert Investigation Unit (RCIU). This role will encompass a number of disciplines within Covert Investigations, namely intelligence, casebuilder, exhibits and disclosure officers. You will be joining a small team of investigators who are responsible for evidential and/or intelligence investigations involving the deployment of Undercover Operatives within the region and managing the disclosure of sensitive information. The post holder must be able to evidence their involvement in the management of complex investigations and a sound proven investigative and/or intelligence background is desirable. Candidates will be required to complete their ICIDP portfolios – PIP2 or currently hold a similar accreditation.


The RCIU provides tactical support to both proactive and reactive operations tasked by Regional Tasking aimed at tackling the Regional High Priority Threats of child sexual abuse and exploitation, cyber crime, modern slavery, County lines and firearms.


The operational focus is around those criminals that pose the greatest threat, risk and harm to the communities of our region, to ensure we are better able to serve the public and protect them from harm. Expressions of interest are sought from officers who seek a rewarding role within an inclusive and friendly team.


Applicants need to be highly motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic with excellent interpersonal skills. A high degree of flexibility is required as support may be required at short notice in response to dynamic and changing circumstances. The post holder will be exposed to CSEA online product, which can be unpleasant and distressing, so must have a high degree of personal resilience. Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of and involvement in the use of law and procedures relating to RIPA, Police Act, CPIA, Human Rights and covert policing methods. The ability to forge meaningful and productive relationships across a host of both internal and external partners is essential. The successful applicant will require the highest individual standards of confidentiality, honesty, integrity, tact and diplomacy. We particularly welcome expressions of interest from BAME officers as Covert Operations is currently under represented and we do not receive many applications from these groups. 

This is a management vetting / security cleared designated post. The preferred candidate will be subject to both procedures. It is the officer’s responsibility to ensure that the relevant forms are completed and processed by their home command area or department. Evidence of management vetting clearance must be provided before a transfer date is agreed.

Knowledge and Experience


  • Serving constable within either Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Mercia or West Midlands Police force
  • Possesses or willing to work towards completion of ICIDP
  • Proven investigatory experience involving complex crime investigations
  • Experience of undertaking sensitive high profile enquiries with limited supervision and exhibit high standards of integrity and professionalism


  • Experience of working with RIPA legislation, structure and practices
  • Experience of covert policing techniques
  • Experience in the role of Case / Exhibits/Disclosure/Intelligence Officer within a major investigation environment
  • Experience of dealing with threat, harm and risk.
  • Have a valid UK driving licence and basic police driving grade.

  • Effective file building skills including disclosure principles and presenting complex information.
  • Effective management of exhibits skills
