About the role:

An opportunity has arisen for officers wishing to work as a Cyber Crime Technical Investigator within the Regional Cyber Crime Unit (RCCU)
The RCCU is part of a national network of dedicated cyber teams responsible for tackling the threat posed by cyber crime. Based within the Regional Organised Crime Unit they provide a regional investigative function around serious offences of cyber dependent crime, and work with partners to enhance the wider understanding of the threat from cyber criminality.
Comprising specialist staff and officers from the 4 regional forces, they provide a wide variety of skills to deliver a holistic approach under the 4P strategy (Pursue, Prevent, Prepare, Protect), and provide wider support across a range of demands. Controlled through a national tasking process, the RCCU also work alongside national and international partners as part of the UK’s National Cyber Security Strategy.
The successful candidate will support case officers managing cyber dependent investigations and they will be required to undertake detailed forensic analysis of recovered devices.
In particular the successful candidate will be required to evidence knowledge in the following areas:
  • Knowledge and / or experience of complex investigation;
  • Proven academic or industry experience relating to computer investigation;
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide evidence in court;
  • Use of intelligence to support policing objectives;
  • Good understanding of disclosure and CPIA requirements.
  • Academic or industry recognised qualifications related to computer forensics;
  • Knowledge of cyber crime and network investigation;
  • Ability to absorb technical information and relay to a non-technical audience;
  • Knowledge of the legislation regarding the Computer Misuse Act, as well as those offences associated with the commission of serious organised crime
  • Knowledge of covert policing tactics;
  • Understanding of network concepts including internet protocols and communication methods;
  • Knowledge of forensic based computer examination software packages such as Guidance Software Encase, Access Data FTK.

  • Experience related to the specialist field of computers, computer investigations or computer;
  • Must possess integrity and professionalism at the highest standard;
  • Must be a dynamic motivated individual who seeks a challenging role in policing and able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Must possess a high level of flexibility in order to respond to new and dynamic information;
  • Must possess a good understanding of the benefits of accurate information and the ability to assess and utilise this knowledge to maximum effect in furtherance of Regional and National objectives;
  • Must be willing to work on live scenes in potentially uncomfortable environments;
  • A technical aptitude and the ability to learn new skills, being adaptable and open to change, embracing new ideas and ways of working;
  • Should have the ability to utilise the Internet understanding how it can enhance investigations;
  • Be able to concentrate on high volumes of information and provide analysis and inference to inform operational decision making;


  • Experience of forensic laboratory practices and procedures, evidence handling and court presentation;
  • Knowledge of malware, database construction and network investigation;
  • Programming Skills – VBA, Python, PHP etc;
  • Experience working in an ISO 17025 Environment;
  • Experience in managing a Windows Domain environment;
  • Experience in dealing with server hardware;
  • Experience in working with SQL.
