At West Midlands Police, Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.
As an apprentice you’ll:
- work alongside experienced staff
- gain job-specific skills
- earn a wage and get holiday pay
- get time for study related to your role (usually one day a week)
Apprenticeships typically take 1 to 3 years but some can take up to 5 years to complete depending on their level and the job role.

Who can apply for a West Midlands Police Apprenticeship?
You can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school, already at college or even if you are in a job role. To start one, you’ll need to be:
- 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays
- Living in England
- Not in full-time education
- Applicants will be required to complete pre- employment vetting checks
Pay and conditions
You’ll be paid during your apprenticeship. At West Midlands Police our Apprentices are currently paid at around £8 per hour averaging a £16,000 per year salary. This compares well to the current minimum wage rate for an apprentice which is £3.50 per hour averaging a £6,600 annual salary.
Hours of work and training
At West Midlands Police you will be paid for:
- your normal working hours-usually 36.5 hours per week
- training that’s part of your apprenticeship- usually one day per week
Holidays
You’ll get at least 20 days paid holiday per year, plus bank holidays.
Levels of apprenticeship
There are a wide range of levels for apprenticeship programmes which relate to the job role, the knowledge, responsibilities and experience required to work in that role. The apprenticeship levels can be compared to existing qualifications to give a guide to the value of each level:

Higher 4,5,6 & 7 HNC, HND, Foundation degree & above
Degree 6 & 7 Bachelor’s or master’s degree
At West Midlands Police we are expanding the levels of apprenticeships that we offer. Currently we offer apprenticeships at levels 2 & 3, but will be offering higher level apprenticeships from 2018/19.
